Cesaro has called his shot on who he would face should he win the Royal Rumble. Since WWE instituted a brand split and have a world champion on both Raw and SmackDown, the Royal Rumble winner has had a choice of which championship they want to challenge for at WrestleMania. Some make their decisions relatively quickly, some change brands and some decisions become legendary stories. For example, Batista’s decision to face his mentor Triple H at WrestleMania 21.
Former United States Champion Cesaro, however, is leaving no doubt about who he would choose to face. The current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. Speaking on Talking Smack, Cesaro made his decision based on his desire to gain revenge against the ‘Tribal Chief.’ Reigns and his cousin Jey Uso had interfered in a number one contender’s gauntlet match and cost Cesaro’s tag team partner Shinsuke Nakamura a shot at facing Reigns himself.
Roman Reign’s special counsel, Paul Heyman stated that a match between Cesaro and Reigns would be “huge box office.” Also appearing on Talking Smack, Heyman would go on to build Cesaro up as a genuine challenger for the title.
Cesaro is no stranger to incredible WrestleMania moments; he won the inaugural Andre The Giant Battle Royal at WrestleMania 30. Winning the match by slamming the gigantic Big Show over the top rope. Following this win, Cesaro would be briefly be aligned with Heyman on television.
The ‘Swiss Cyborg’ has never had a one-on-one match for a world championship of any kind in WWE. After building momentum by defeating, Dolph Ziggler and Daniel Bryan in recent weeks, the Royal Rumble could be arriving at the right time for Cesaro to finally get that one on one opportunity.
There’s no guarantee Roman Reigns will still be WWE Universal Champion by the time WrestleMania comes around, however. He defends that title at the Royal Rumble against Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing match.
