‘The Swiss Superman’ Cesaro has spoken about getting hired and fired by WWE in 2006 before he even had the opportunity to set foot in the company.
Teaming with Chris Hero as the popular and respect Kings of Wrestling in Ring of Honor, Cesaro had been signed to a WWE contract and was due to depart the company for the heady heights of World Wrestling Entertainment.
However, things did not go to plan and WWE released him shortly after hiring him despite the then Claudio Castagnoli having worked out his notice with ROH. In fact, Kings of Wrestling had dropped the ROH Tag Team Championships and announced the star’s final bout with the company in preparation.
Now, Cesaro has joined Lilian Garcia on her Chasing Glory Podcast to talk about his swift arrival and departure from the company and what happened to him after his defection from the indies didn’t go ahead as planned:
“Literally, I got signed and finished all my Indie bookings. When I was just about done with all my bookings, I got a call that they ‘can’t hire me right now.’ I responded, ‘I am hired and already getting paid.’ I was going to move in two weeks, I was going to OVW. I was told that I was going to get my release in the next two weeks. They didn’t say why, I asked why and didn’t get a clear response. I saw the person after, who hired me, and he said that do this day he still didn’t know and that was at a point where he wasn’t with the company, so there was no reason for him to not tell me the truth. He just said he got told to let me go. I got paid by WWE for three months after that and started back up on the Indies. In the end, it worked out.”
Cesaro finally arrived in WWE in 2011, five years after his original promised move and has remained there to this day. Currently, he is teaming on Friday Night SmackDown with Shinsuke Nakamura.
