Cassie Lee has revealed that she nearly quit WWE following the death of Brodie Lee only to be talked out of it by a fellow Superstar.
Brodie Lee who worked in WWE for a number of years as Luke Harper passed away on December 26th 2020. Lee signed with AEW in March 2020 quickly winning the TNT Championship from Cody Rhodes. ‘The Exalted One’ lost the championship back to Rhodes in October, in what would ultimately be his final match.
Lee’s untimely passing sent shockwaves around the wrestling world with wrestlers all over the globe mourning the loss of their beloved college.
Speaking in a new interview with Chris Van Vliet on his Insight podcast Cassie Lee has revealed that Brodie’s passing almost led her to quit WWE. Lee explained that she was incredibly unhappy and had to be talked out of walking out by Rhea Ripley.
“I really struggled when Brodie [Lee] passed. I struggled with the big picture and putting things into perspective. I was really unhappy at work, really unhappy. A few times I thought to myself I can’t do this anymore and I am going to ask for my release. A few times I was in the locker room, some sort of creative would change and it would just… I would be just so upset. Rhea [Ripley] of all people had to talk me off the ledge, because I was about to walk into talent relations and say ‘I’m out. I don’t want to do this anymore.’ I was so unhappy. So the release was a blessing in disguise. I was so close to asking for my release but I never actually pulled the trigger.”
Cassie Lee did eventually leave WWE in April 2021, being released alongside her former tag team partner Billie Kay among others. After enjoying a run of success as The IIconics, the pair were broken up in August 2020.
In conversation with Van Vliet, Lee revealed that the split may have been her fault. The Aussie explained that while the pair were teaming together she expressed a desire to work as a singles star. Reflecting on the break-up, Lee it was the “worst decision she ever made” because her singles run failed to ignite.
Both Cassie Lee and Jessie McKay (Billie Kay) were released from WWE in April 2021 as the company continued to make budget cuts. Since then the pair have started their own Off Her Chops podcast but have yet to make an announcement about their future in the wrestling ring.
