Carmella has opened up about losing a potential long-term tag team partner in Billie Kay following the Australian’s release from WWE in April.
The two women teamed up at WrestleMania 37 as part of a tag team turmoil match on WrestleMania Saturday. After disposing of Naomi and Lana, they were eliminated from the match by The Riott Squad. Eventually, Natalya and Tamina came out on top earning a WWE Women’s Tag Team Title match on WrestleMania Sunday.
Nobody knew at the time that unfortunately, this would be Billie Kay’s last appearance in a WWE ring. She alongside a host of WWE Superstars were released from their contracts on April 15th.
Speaking to WWE Hall Of Famers The Bella Twins on their new The Bellas Podcast, Carmella talked about Kay’s release. According to the former WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, the partnership with Kay was something she was excited to explore.
“I don’t know what the right or wrong things to say is. All I can speak from is my experience and we were super excited for this story and I felt like, okay, I’m done with this whole sexy gimmick or try to be sexy that they want me to do, which is fine. It’s fun to be sexy, but I feel like I wanted to show my personality more. I wanted to show a little bit more of a fun side and I was looking forward to doing that with Billie.”
Carmella then touched on Billie Kay’s antics during their WrestleMania entrance. Kay stole the show as she mimicked Carmella’s actions on the way to the ring.
“Like you said, our entrance alone, she was cracking me up. So I was really looking forward to seeing where that was going to go and unfortunately, we can’t do that anymore. Even Peyton, those two were some of my closest friends since I’ve been here and since they got here. So it was the first time I was really rocked by a release. These were my friends, not just my co-workers.”
Since their release, both Billie Kay and Peyton Royce have trademarked new names as they prepare to continue their wrestling careers post-WWE.
Carmella also discussed her opinions on the state of booking for the women’s division in WWE.
