Carmella has looked back on her 2 WWE Money in the Bank victories and how plans changed as she was not the originally planned winner for the rematch.
Money in the Bank 2017 was the site of the first-ever women’s match in the history of the stipulation. While fans were happy to see the stars of the women’s division being given the same opportunity as the men, the finish was not as well-received.
James Ellsworth, who accompanied Carmella to the ring, unhooked the briefcase and dropped it down so that Carmella could win the match. Due to the way the match ended, a rematch was booked 2 weeks later. This time winning the match fairly, Carmella captured the briefcase and went on to cash-in her contract on the SmackDown after WrestleMania the following year. However, according to the former Women’s Champion, another name was set to win the rematch.
“It Was Supposed To Be Becky Lynch”: Carmella Talks Altered Money In The Bank Match
Speaking with Justin of The Wrestling Classic, the former WWE star stated that Becky Lynch was supposed to win the Money in the Bank match on SmackDown:
“No, it was supposed to be Becky. Becky was supposed to win the second time. It was the SmackDown after Money in the Bank, I went out there and cut a promo. I think we opened the show, came back through the curtain and got a standing ovation. And I remember Vince was like, ‘I wish my top guys could cut a promo like that,’ For me, I knew I could do that but I wanted to go out there and I finally got the opportunity to show that. I did it a little bit in my feud with Nikki [Bella], but this is on another level.”
Continuing, the former Women’s Champion noted how plans for the go-home segment changed, signalling that she would win the Money in the Bank match a second time:
“We had a segment later that night, I think it was the closing segment of the night. We were out there with Daniel Bryan and there were supposed to be physicality and I think Becky or Charlotte, I was supposed to beat them up because I was going to lose it the next week. They changed all the physicality to them beating me up and I was just I just knew in my heart I’m I am going to win it again, and I did.”
In recent news, Carmella has spoken about how she felt “hurt” about how her WWE run ended.
