Carmella has been announced as Bianca Belair’s new number one contender for the SmackDown Women’s Champion after Bayley was ruled out of action with a knee injury.
According to a report from Fightful Select, Bayley sustained an ACL tear during a mandatory ‘return to road’ training session at the WWE Performance Center. The report goes on to add that ‘The Role Model’ was chain wrestling as part of the preparation for WWE’s return to live touring and during the training session her knee would ‘pop’.
With WWE confirming that Bayley will be out of action for around nine months, the longest-reigning SmackDown Women’s Champion will no longer have the chance to reclaim her crown from The EST of WWE at Money In The Bank.
On SmackDown Sonya Deville came to the ring to announce a rejig of sorts to account for Belair’s lack of opponent for the pay-per-view. Deville revealed that Bianca Belair will no longer defend her title at Money In The Bank but will now put the belt on the line on SmackDown on July 16th, the company’s first show back on the road after the pandemic.
Deville then named Belair’s new number one contender as Carmella, after previously naming her as one of SmackDown’s entrants into the women’s Money In The Bank match. Carmella then came to the ring to tell everyone how hot she was before being interrupted by Liv Morgan. Morgan took issue with Carmella first being put in the Money In The Bank match and now being named as the number one contender without having to earn either opportunity.
Deville then announced that Morgan would be taking Carmella’s place in the Money In The Bank match. Liv Morgan joins Asuka, Naomi, Nikki A.S.H, and Alexa Bliss from Raw along with the returning Zelina Vega in the match for the briefcase. Those six stars are set to be joined by two more entrants that will also be decided on the blue brand’s 16th of July show.
