Buddy Matthews Reportedly Wants To Return To WWE

Buddy Matthews may be on his way out of AEW and heading towards a return to WWE.

In early September, an unnamed AEW talent reportedly asked to be released from their contract. This came shortly after Malakai Black was granted a “conditional release” from the company.

WWE reportedly contacted a number of AEW contracted performers about potentially moving over now that Triple H is in charge of creative. One of the performers turned out to be Black, whose “conditional release” required him not to wrestle in WWE. Black has since come out and denied the reports of his release on his social media.

Reporting in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer confirmed that another member of The House of Black, Buddy Matthews, wants to return to WWE. Following the No DQ match between the House of Black vs. Sting and Darby Allin, there was some speculation whether the finish was used to write Matthews off television.

After his Fight Life Pro Wrestling match on Saturday, September 24th, Matthews announced that he would “need to go away for a while” and even referenced Black. Meltzer noted the similarities between Matthew’s promo and what Black said following a match at the Prestige Pro Wrestling show in California on September 17th.

“He was on a show in Rhode Island last night and said that he needed to step away and recalibrate and he even mentioned Malakai Black. It was very similar wording to what Malakai Black said when he did that independent show a week or two ago. It’s the same situation. How it’s being handled [and] what’s gonna happen is up in the air. But he’s gone for now…Obviously, like Malakai Black, they both wanted to leave and they want to go to WWE. They’re both under long-term contracts and we’ll see how this plays out.”

Buddy Matthews has seemingly denied the reports of him being written off from AEW with a gif on social media. Additionally, the company tweeted a happy 34th birthday to the Australian star, sent out a day after Fightful reported that he “expressed dissatisfaction regarding his situation” multiple times.

During his WWE run, Matthews became Cruiserweight Champion and aligned himself with Seth Rollins. He was released from his WWE contract on June 2nd, 2021.
