AEW President Tony Khan provided a health update regarding Bryan Danielson following his announcement before Forbidden Door.
It’s been weeks since Bryan Danielson announced that he wasn’t cleared to compete at AEW X NJPW: Forbidden Door. The American Dragon was supposed to battle Zack Sabre Jr. at the show, but instead, he was replaced with Claudio Castagnoli.
It was reported after Danielson’s announcement that he may have suffered a concussion during the chaotic Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing. Danielson has a history of concussions, at one point having to briefly retire due to concussion issues during his tenure in WWE.
Now, AEW President Tony Khan has provided a health update regarding Danielson and his explanation for why he decided not to clear him for Forbidden Door.
Speaking on his “Sunday Night’s Main Event” podcast, Dave Meltzer stated that although Danielson has recovered from his concussion, Khan is still cautious with The American Dragon and has yet to clear him for in-ring competition. Khan recently revealed to the New York Post that Danielson was insistent on competing at Forbidden Door, despite his history of concussions.
“I don’t think it was a good thing Bryan [Danielson] got hurt,” said Khan. “I think that’s one of the worst things, but he’s doing much better. I talk to him a few times a week. I had talked to him on Wednesday when we were in St. Louis for ‘Road Rager’ and I talked to Bryan. And Bryan was like, ‘I feel f—king great! I’m ready to come back and I’m gonna fight Zack Sabre and we’re gonna go to Blood and Guts. Let’s f*king go man.’
“Then I talked to him the Saturday, eight days before the pay-per-view and he’s not doing as well. So I immediately was like, ‘You’re not wrestling. If you’re not feeling great eight days out, I don’t care if you have seven straight days. I’m shutting you down until further notice.’ He has scans coming up. I’m like, ‘I don’t care what they say. They could be perfectly clear.’”
Danielson has remained off television since his announcement. Meanwhile, his replacement at Forbidden Door, Claudio Castagnoli, has helped The Blackpool Combat Club defeat The Jericho Appreciation Society at Blood and Guts.
