Brody King has hit back at criticism of a recent House of Black segment where Julia Hart appeared set to join the group before changing her mind.

On the May 4th episode of AEW Dynamite, the long-running storyline between Julia Hart and the Varsity Blondes and the mysterious House of Black appeared to be coming to a head.

The group’s leader, Malakai Black had blinded Hart in one eye back in December by spitting mist in her face. In the months that followed, Hart reappeared with an eye-patch, and later additional dark make up. During this period, Hart’s character has changed dramatically, seemingly embracing a darker side. This has led to a clamour for her to join the House of Black.

During the most recent segment, the group handed Hart a chair and she seemed poised to attack Griff Garrison before changing her mind.

With the story already lasting several months, many fans criticised the segment for prolonging the storyline further.

Speaking exclusively to Inside The Ropes’ very own Innes McVey, House of Black member Brody King responded to the criticism, explaining that it comes from some fans wanting instant gratification.

“I feel like the fans want instant gratification at all times and then they get frustrated when they have to wait for it. But once it all pans out and you finally see the finished product and why these things are happening, then they go ‘oh!’. Then they get to see these call-backs and all these little Easter eggs and hints they were given along the way.

If we saw Avengers: Endgame before we saw the 20 movies before that, and Thanos just got defeated, it’s like ‘oh. Okay?’

They get you more invested and get you to this point where you have to wait for it and you want it and you’re just dying for it, then it finally happens and you’re like ‘yes! That is why I waited this long for it!’ Not to say this is as complex as that but I feel like wrestling is, at times, missing that factor of making fans wait for it, making them beg for it, and at times criticize it because they’re not getting it.

When my three-year-old wants ice cream and I tell him he’s got to wait for dinner, he’s going to yell at me until he gets it. But then when he eats, he’s happy about it!”

Brody King made his AEW debut back in January where he was unveiled as Malakai Black’s mystery partner. The pair were later joined by Buddy Murphy.
