Britt Baker Reveals Chris Jericho’s Advice About Her Character

Britt Baker On Chris Jericho

Britt Baker has opened up about the advice she’s been receiving from fellow AEW star Chris Jericho.

The current AEW Women’s World Champion became the first woman to sign with AEW when she put pen to paper in early January 2019. In the months and years that followed Britt Baker has gone on to become one of the biggest female wrestlers on the planet.

While Baker, is for the most part presented as a heel on AEW television, it’s not uncommon to hear loud cheers from the crowd when she appears, whether she’s wrestling or not. This has led to suggestions from some quarters that the star should revert back to being a babyface as she is clearly popular with fans.

However, Baker herself has a different way of looking at the situation. Speaking to Inside the Ropes’ Kenny McIntosh for issue 16 of Inside the Ropes Magazine, Baker said Chris Jericho encouraged her to “go along for the ride.”

“Chris Jericho gave me the advice, ‘Don’t try and swim upstream, go along for the ride with whatever’s happening,’ and I think Tony Khan has the same vision. I am who I am and fans are either going to cheer or boo, one way or another.”

Expanding further, Baker said that it doesn’t really matter whether she’s a good guy or a bad guy. The only thing that’s important is that fans react one way or another, and she’s able to contribute to the show.

“I think a lot of it depends on my opponent, too, but Dr. Britt Baker DMD now is a fan favourite, whether you view her as a face or a heel. That’s all I want to be—someone that fans react to. If they’re booing me, if they’re cheering me, that’s great, I don’t care, I just want to be someone that contributes to the show and can tell a great story.”

Early on in her career, Baker was very much the archetypal babyface before turning to the dark side in early 2020. Reflecting on the switch in her character, the current Women’s Champion praised her friend Tony Schiavone for helping her grow into the role.

Britt Baker claimed the AEW Women’s World Championship at Double or Nothing in May 2021, embarking on a reign which currently stands at over 230 days. Her most recent title defence came at AEW Battle of the Belts where she saw off Riho.
