Brian Pillman Jr Vacates OVW Title Due To AEW Commitments

Former WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling has announced that current OVW Heavyweight Champion, Brian Pillman Jr., will be vacating the belt due to his ongoing commitments with All Elite Wrestling.

In a statement released via social media, OVW noted there was no ill will towards Pillman and that on January 9th a new champion would be crowned, with the winner of the promotion’s ‘Nightmare Rumble’ taking the belt.

It was also revealed that later in the evening, the new champion would challenge current OVW National Champion (and former TNA talent) Jessie Godderz.

In response to the statement, Pillman sent out a heartfelt message via Twitter, thanking the promotion and encouraging fans to continue supporting OVW:

From taking my first bump in an OVW ring to then winning the Heavyweight Championship inside a steel cage 4 years later, words cannot describe how important this title was to me! Amidst a pandemic I chased every available opportunity which resulted in running a tight schedule. In order to full commit my talents to AEW and limit my exposure to infection, I have cut down on outside bookings. I wish nothing but the best for OVW as they crown a new champion on Jan 9th at the Nightmare Rumble! I urge you all to support this talented locker room and crew!

Pillman has been working with AEW since July, having developed an impressive tandem with fellow All Elite newcomer Griff Garrison.

The duo, now known as the Varsity Blondes, recently made their Dynamite debut in a losing effort to FTR (formerly The Revival in WWE).

Pillman’s contractual status is currently unclear, as previous reports had suggested that he remained tied to Major League Wrestling, however it appears that his long term future may be under Tony Khan’s banner at AEW.
