Brian Kendrick isn’t the name associated with the WWE Championship but back in 2008, a unique match typing allowed him to be champion… technically. Now, Kendrick is talking about his run in the Championship Scramble for the WWE Championship back at Unforgiven 2008.
Brian Kendrick, during the only Championship Scramble for the WWE Championship, was briefly champion and would have become a lineal Champion if he would have managed to play gatekeeper long enough to avoid anyone else from scoring a fall for the rest of that match. In order to hold onto the title, Kendrick would have had to defeat Jeff Hardy, Triple H, Shelton Benjamin, and MVP.
Brian Kendrick Has Fond Memories Of The Championship Scramble From Unforgiven 2008
Speaking about his one and only brush with glory and the WWE Championship, Brian Kendrick, during a virtual signing with Captain’s Corner, called the moment a high point of his career
“It was fun,” Kendrick said. “It was a great moment for me, a real high point. It was cool, it was thrilling, the match itself felt like a lot of fun. I might’ve watched it back twice, but that would be at the most. I might’ve watched it back once whereas the match with Rich Swann, where I lost the ‘205 Live’ belt — which was more recent — I’ve watched it back more. It was a great moment, but it wasn’t necessarily my favorite match.”
Brian Kendrick would eventually come back to WWE as part of the WWE Cruiserweight Classic in 2016 and have a run with the Cruiserweight Championship that he is more fond of.
Most recently, Brian Kendrick received a tryout as a WWE producer during Survivor Series 2022, reportedly at the request of Ronda Rousey, who Brian has helped train in the past. Read more here.
