In a recent episode of the “Attitude Era Podcast,” WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart offered a behind-the-scenes look at his legendary match against his brother Owen Hart at WrestleMania X. This bout, known for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, remains a pivotal moment in the Hart family legacy.
“The Hitman” shared how the idea for the match initially came about.
When they gave me the idea about me wrestling my brother, I went back and I talked to Owen about it. I said, ‘They got this crazy idea about me wrestling you.’ It actually was going to be one of my other brothers first [Bruce]. That brother was not able to wrestle me. I remember saying, ‘But Owen’s the better wrestler,’ and if I was going to do that idea, I’d have to do it with Owen.
Owen was enthusiastic about the storyline, eager to bring it to life. But, Bret Hart emphasised to him the importance of maintaining “kayfabe”—the wrestling term for keeping the illusion of reality.
When I got to the building the next day, I remember Owen came up to me and goes, ‘I want to do it.’ I said, ‘If you want to do it, we’ll do it,’ but remember this, Owen, if we do this thing, we do it old school. We don’t talk to each other.’
Their commitment to the storyline extended beyond the ring including when the entire family would get together at the famous Hart House in Calgary.
I remember, like, even at my mom’s house for Sunday dinners, he’d sit at one end of the table, I’d sit at the other end of the table. We’d walk right past each other, but never say anything to each other.
Owen Hart won their initial match, the opener at WrestleMania X, a contest celebrated for its athletic excellence and storytelling. Owen, often seen as one of Bret’s most formidable opponents, brought genuine familial tension to the ring, enhancing the narrative and leaving a lasting impact on WWE history.
