Bret Hart Says CM Punk Is The Best Overall Wrestler Aside From Himself

Bret Hart CM Punk

WWE Hall Of Famer Bret Hart has named AEW star CM Punk as the best overall wrestler in the sport, with one small caveat of The Hitman not naming himself.

Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart is renowned as one of the greatest in-ring technicians to ever lace up a pair of boots. Part of the Hart wrestling dynasty, The Hitman grew up surrounded by the sport and made his start in his father’s Stampede Wrestling promotion.

In the mid-eighties, Bret, along with brother-in-law Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart made their way to the bright lights of the World Wrestling Federation where they achieved success as The Hart Foundation. Together Hart and Neidhart captured the WWF Tag Team Championship twice but bigger things were to come for Hart.

Bret Hart went on to hold the WWF Intercontinental Championship twice before capturing the biggest prize in the sport in October 1992 when he won the WWF Championship. Hart went on to win the title four more times during his spell with the company which infamously came to an end at Survivor Series 1997.

In WCW, Hart found further success in the ring becoming a four-time WCW United States Champion and holding the WCW World Title twice.

Speaking to CBC Radio Bret Hart answered some rapid-fire questions and named the best overall wrestler – other than The Hitman himself – as AEW’s CM Punk. Punk made headlines around the world when he ended his self-imposed seven-year exile from the wrestling business and joined AEW in August 2021.

Hart also shared some thoughts on his favourite in-ring opponent and named his late brother Owen as his favourite Canadian:

“Favorite Opponent To Work With – Mr. Perfect

Favorite Move (Non-Sharpshooter) – Front Turnbuckle Bump

Favorite Canadian – Owen Hart

Favorite Foreign Object – Ring Bell

Better Rivalry: Shawn Michaels or Steve Austin – Steve Austin, by a hair

Better Arena: Madison Square Garden or Calgary Saddledome – MSG. Calgary was a quiet crowd, always quiet and studious, which was great. They studied me and were big fans of mine, but Madison Square Garden were longtime and educated fans and loved a good wrestler.

Favorite Win – First WWE Title win in Saskatoon against Ric Flair

Favorite Loss – WrestleMania 12 Iron Man Match against Shawn Michaels”
