A new report has shed more light on Bray Wyatt being released from WWE after a prolonged absence that is now being put down to a medical issue.
Wyatt – real name Windham Rotunda – was released from his WWE contract to the surprise of many on the 31st of July. Wyatt last competed for the company at WrestleMania 37 when he lost to long-time rival Randy Orton after a distraction from the twisted Alexa Bliss. The next night on Raw, Wyatt appeared in his final Firefly Funhouse segment, giving a promo that eerily foreshadowed his departure from the promotion.
Shortly after it was confirmed that Wyatt had left WWE Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer noted that Wyatt was told his release was due to budget cuts. Adding that the former world champion had in fact been preparing to return in August.
A report from Fightful Select then corroborated that information before adding more details. It revealed that it was Johnny Ace (Laurinaitis) who ultimately handled the call while also informing other WWE talent. Those within WWE were apparently shocked by the suggestion that Wyatt’s departure was related to budget cuts as he is seen as a money maker and a great merchandise seller when he was active.
In addition, the report notes that Wyatt’s name was brought up during a recent round of talent cuts but remained with the company. The report closes by saying that Wyatt had become very protective over his character after recent creative decisions.
In addition, Mike Johnson of PWInsider gave his own update on the situation. Johnson confirmed that budget cuts were the reason given before revealing that one source has “pointed the finger squarely at WWE President Nick Khan and CFO Kristina Salen.” Adding that the pair are “obsessed” with the company not being one iota in the red. The report goes on to say that the relationship between Vince McMahon and Wyatt at times ran very “hot and cold.”
Now Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated has reported that Bray Wyatt being absent from television for months was to do with a medical reason although the former WWE Champion had been cleared before his release:
“Since WrestleMania 37 in April, Rotunda has been out with an undisclosed physical ailment, one that Sports Illustrated confirmed is not concussion-related. He was finally cleared last Thursday, then effectively fired on Saturday.”
Many in the wrestling world reacted publicly to Wyatt’s release including his former ally, Alexa Bliss.
