WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T has recalled Vince McMahon’s reaction to being told he wanted to quit WWE was to hire the star’s wife instead.
Former five-time WCW Champion Booker T was one of the major stars to make the jump to the then-WWF when Vince McMahon bought out his competition in 2001.
Speaking to fellow WWE Hall Of Famers Gerald Brisco and JBL on Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw the master of the Spinaroonie divulged WWE Chairman Vince McMahon’s surprising reaction to being told that Booker T was ready to leave the company:
“I told Vince I was gonna take a step back from the company. He was like, ‘Why would you wanna do that?’ I was like, ‘I think it might be best for my relationship, just getting married and whatnot.’ He was like, ‘Well, uh, why don’t we just hire Sharmell?’ I go in to quit and he ends up talking about hiring Sharmell!”
Booker T and Sharmell’s double act reached new heights when, in 2006, Booker won the King Of The Ring Tournament, and King Booker and Queen Sharmell were born. Booker T went on to give his wife all the credit for making that work:
“I think they thought, ‘Why don’t we do the King of the Ring and make Booker the King and have the King and Queen?’ I give her [Sharmell] all the credit for making that happen, and I tell you this… I couldn’t have been the King that I was without Queen Sharmell. It would never have worked out.”
