While Royal Rumble matches have become known for special appearances the men’s match in 2023 saw Booker T feature as the only returning legend.
The two-time WWE Hall of Famer entered the match at number 21 and squeezed in a Spinaroonie before being eliminated less than a minute later by Gunther. The outing was Booker T’s first competitive action in a WWE ring since wrestling at a live event back in 2012.
Speaking on his Hall of Fame podcast, the 57-year-old star said that he had requested to square off against Dominik during the match.
“I requested Dominik for that event. And like I said, man, it was awesome because I’ve been doing this a long time – since 1990 – the first time I stepped in the squared circle. I always said it was like deja vu with the place that I love so much. When I finally got into the game, I said, ‘Man, they gonna have to kick me out this party. I’m sticking around as long as I can.”
Booker T – “That’s Dreams Coming True”
The veteran added that it was a dream come true to share the ring with the young star he first remembers as a toddler during his own in-ring career.
“To have been in the game 32 years, to watch Dominik in the locker room when he was a baby – when he was a little baby; he was a toddler, okay? And then to be in the ring with him, man, come on! That right there, that’s dreams coming true that you never had. That’s stuff that you don’t ever think you’ll be doing.”
The Royal Rumble match was eventually won by Cody Rhodes who entered at number 30 to make his return from injury. Rhodes saw off Gunther to score the win as the Austrian set a new record for time spent in the match.
