Bobby Lashley Opens Up About Facing Brock Lesnar

WWE Champion Bobby Lashley has opened up about facing Brock Lesnar ahead of the two men entering the Elimination Chamber match.

The one-on-one bout between the pro wrestling and MMA stars was a long time becoming before they met for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble.

In that contest, The All Mighty Bobby Lashley shockingly unseated The Beast Incarnate as WWE Champion with more than a little help from Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Lesnar’s now-former advocate, Paul Heyman.

Speaking exclusively to Inside The Ropes’ Kenny McIntosh for issue 18 of Inside The Ropes magazine, Bobby Lashley gave his thoughts on stepping inside the ring with Brock Lesnar ahead of the two men meeting at the Royal Rumble:

“I think that it’s cool that it’s happened now because of where we are in our career. Brock has always been the beast that has come in but look what he’s doing, he’s having fun so there’s different layers of Brock. But at the same time my career has kind of taken off and I’ve matured in my career over the years and developed into The All Mighty so it is a fun match-up to prepare for. I think right now in my career is the best time to do it.”

“Of course, I would have wanted that thing 17 years ago when we were both just reckless bangers but I think right now, I think we can offer a lot more to people. I think we can offer a lot more story, I think we can offer a lot more background and just something completely different.”

“I have a great deal of respect for him coming from the background that we both came from. I understand what he went through, I understand what he accomplished and I have a great, great deal of respect for him. There’s a lot of different ways you can look at it, you can look at it in a way of you know what I have respect for you and that’s why I want to fight you. That’s how I look at it.”

Of course, Lashley and Lesnar had shared a ring together prior to the Royal Rumble as they were part of the 5-man match for the WWE Championship at Day 1. Brock Lesnar’s participation in that bout only came about when his original opponent had to withdraw from the event due to COVID.

As far as that bout went, Bobby Lashley says he knew the crowd would be electric when he finally went face to face with Lesnar:

“I can feel it. It’s an energy thing in the business of wrestling. Like we can feel what the crowd feels, we know what the crowd feels, we know what they’re going to feel in a lot of cases. Sometimes it is a miss but everybody in the room knew ‘oh crap when Bobby and Brock finally face-off, it’s gonna be bananas’ because we just want to see these 2 guys that have not been around each other at all but have careers that kind of mimic each other.”

“I had never met Brock. I met Brock maybe a couple of years ago something like that and it was just in passing. So me and Brock had no dialogue for all this time. People had been wanting to compare us and they wanted us to fight, I think they just wanted us to go out in the middle of the street and just club [each other] to death.”

“I don’t know what it is, it’s just been like that forever and it’s cool, it’s a cool feeling. So I knew without a doubt when we actually give them what they’ve been begging for, they’re going to go crazy.”
