During WWE TLC 2020, it was announced that Big E would challenge Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental Championship on Christmas Day.
The bout was made following the 8-Man Tag Team Match which transpired on the December 20 Kickoff Show, when Big E, Daniel Bryan, Otis and Chad Gable took on Sami Zayne, King Corbin, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro.
At the conclusion of the bout, it was the New Day member that pinned the Intercontinental Champion to win the match and earn himself a shot at the gold.
Both champion and challenger have been locked in a rivalry for several weeks now, with Big E gatecrashing the first annual Sami Awards – a parody of the Slammy Awards – and adding his name to the envelope to crown the Superstar of the Year which Zayn clearly meant for himself.
The segment ended in Big E hurling the champion down the aisle and celebrating with the award on the December 18 Friday Night SmackDown.
With Big E currently in the midst of a major push, which has included new entrance music and reverting back to his old pre-match routine of chalking his hands, it would stand to reason that WWE crown a new Intercontinental Champion as we head into a New Year in order to set Big E up with a WrestleMania worthy clash against a name such as Seth Rollins in March.
The Christmas Day Friday Night SmackDown will be pre-recorded on Tuesday December 22.
