Big E Recaptures Intercontinental Championship On Christmas Day SmackDown

Big E holding the Intercontinental Championship during his reign

Big E has won the Intercontinental Championship for a second time, defeating Sami Zayn in a Lumberjack match during the Christmas Day episode of SmackDown!

The two fought in the show’s main event following Roman Reigns and Charlotte Flair & Asuka successful defences of both the Universal and Women’s Tag Team Championships respectively. After a back-and-forth contest, Zayn attempted to escape before several other Lumberjacks carried the champion back into the ring. This allowed Big E to hit the Big Ending to end Sami Zayn’s reign at 89 days and win the Intercontinental Championship!

Tensions between Zayn and Big E have been brewing over the last few months with the former New Day member most recently pinning the Intercontinental Champion on the TLC pre-show in an 8-man tag. On last week’s SmackDown, Big E interfered in the first-ever Sami Awards hosted by Zayn – causing himself to be declared the winner of the Superstar of the Year Sami Award when Sami intended to award the prize to himself.

The result was leaked earlier this week when a select few fans lucky enough to join the episode’s ThunderDome crowd saw the title change happen live during the taping on the 22nd.

This is the second time Big E has picked up the Intercontinental Championship, winning the belt initially all the way back in 2013! Then known as Big E Langston, Big E defeated Curtis Axel on the November 18th episode of RAW and would retain the belt going into 2014 – defending against the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Damien Sandow and Jack Swagger – before losing it to Bad News Barrett at Extreme Rules.

Shortly after, he’d join this little-known group known as The New Day alongside Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods… Whatever happened to them anyway?
