Big E has opened up about the New Day’s Schoolhouse Rock inspired ring gear. The New Day member explained that although it’s potentially divisive, it’s also something he holds close to his heart.
Guesting on Renee Paquette’s podcast Oral Sessions, the two-time Intercontinental Champion spoke at length about his efforts to combat racism and how that inspired the ring gear.
“Maybe I could expose someone to something they hadn’t heard before. That’s where we started wearing the Schoolhouse Rock inspired gear. I thought, Schoolhouse Rock impacted so many people. It’s something they remember many years later, decades later. But, what if we did something like that for black activists, for just important black figures. […] I thought it’s not going to be for everyone, not everyone’s going to learn something, but maybe someone sees Ruby Bridges [American Civil Rights Activist] on my gear and is curious and looks up her story. That was kind of our thought.”
Big E continued and mentioned another person he wanted to highlight with his gear in the hope people would research them;
“[It’s the] same thing like Jane Elliott, she’s not black but she’s devoted her life to anti-racism. It felt like it was something. It was something that’s important to me and, like, we’re not going to topple this or solve all these problems in a week or two – and I wanted to continue these conversations.”
The former NXT Champion was last seen in action on the January 22nd edition of Friday Night Smackdown, where he retained his Intercontinental Title against Apollo Crews following interference from Sami Zayn
The long-time partner of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods isn’t currently slated to defend his title at the Royal Rumble, but has instead been announced for the over the top rope extravaganza itself.
