The Royal Rumble is firmly in the history books and now all roads lead to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida and WrestleMaina 37. As with every year there will huge debate over which matches should be considered the main event, but WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix believes that one match in particular deserves to be locked into that spot.
Appearing on WWE’s The Bump, Beth Phoenix chatted with the panel about Women’s History Month, when she found out husband Edge would be facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania and her hopes for the history making clash between Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair.
Throughout history WrestleMania has been the home of the ‘dream match’ and the highly anticipated showdown between WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks and 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble winner Bianca Belair certainly fits into that category. Banks has been to the top of the mountain before and is the established star, while Belair is the coming force in women’s wrestling in WWE.
The match will see two African-American women go toe to toe at the ‘Grandest Stage Of Them All’ for the very first time, and Phoenix believes that the match can’t be anything else other than a main event. The Glamazon called the match a “dream matchup” before assessing the two combatants.
“A dream matchup! This matchup up could go either way,” she began. “Sasha Banks had arguable not only the greatest year of her career in 2020 but maybe of any Superstar on the brand. Then, you bring up Bianca Belair, who is just on the cusp of breaking through to being this dominant athlete across all brands. I’ve been saying it for a long time, but everyone sees something in her. She is such an intelligent young lady and a role model. I would love to see her finally get her shining moment. I don’t see that being anything else other than a main event.”
Beth Phoenix who will be the subject of an episode of the WWE Icons on the WWE Network later this month, also reflected on how it feels to have so many of today’s female star’s look up to her and her achievements
“It’s humbling and touching, but I also have this understanding that I’m standing on the shoulders of the women that came before me,” she noted. “The glass ceilings are not only cracking, but they’re shattering everywhere we look, especially in sports. I’m happy to be a small part of that. I think we’re heading in the right direction.”
The three-time WWE Women’s Champion also just so happens to be married to another Hall of Famer in Edge. The Rated R Superstar is set to face Roman Reigns at ‘The Show Of Shows’ and apparently left his wife in the dark like everyone else ahead of making his decision at Elimination Chamber. Edge has famously passed the news of his WWE work on to Phoenix in the form of post it notes in the past, but the NXT commentator revealed that she didn’t even get that this time around.
“I didn’t even get a note that time,” Beth Phoneix said with a chuckle. “So, I’m guessing that there is one written, but I just haven’t found it yet. I will say this: If there are levels of trolling, my husband is like at the expert, master level. But he only trolls me. It keeps our relationship exciting.”
“I feel like the cool thing with Roman Reigns and Edge facing each other at WrestleMania is that I’m not sure which way this is going to go,” she admitted. “Spear versus spear; but also have two of the most savage human beings on the microphone that I have ever heard. I feel like we’re going to hear some vitriol on the mic like we’ve never heard before. I’m just excited to watch this play out.”
