Becky Lynch called back to Nikki Bella’s engagement in 2017 during a recent segment on Monday Night RAW that set up the duo’s unprecedented title match at WWE Clash in Paris.
Bella was once engaged to John Cena. While Cena’s proposing to Bella originally happened in early 2017, they turned it into a WrestleMania moment later that year, on The Greatest of Them All getting down on one knee and everything. However, the couple called off the engagement a year later. She recently opened up about meeting Cena years later, only everything was formal.
This past Monday, the former Divas Champion confronted Becky Lynch. The two went back and forth, but then The Man owned Nikki Bella after she stated, “Me and my hot husband [Seth Rollins] are the greatest wrestling couple of all time. But wait a minute, at one point, that would have been you and your, oh wait, you can’t see him anymore!”
The segment garnered praise from viewers. It also set up a Women’s Intercontinental Championship match between Nikki Bella and the titleholder at Clash in Paris on August 31.
Nikki Bella Loved The John Cena Burn On WWE RAW, Even Though Becky Lynch Caught Her Off Guard
On The Nikki & Brie Show, Nikki Bella addressed Becky Lynch’s extremely personal dig at her past. Although a lot of fans assumed Bella would have taken offence at it, the former Divas Champion felt otherwise. She loved it, but admitted that she did not see it coming.
What’s crazy is people are calling it the best promo of the year. Becky burned me, lit me up, and everyone’s saying it’s the best burn of the year. […] But these are the moments we want, right? That burn was funny because I actually love it.
I truly feel that right now, I’m in this underdog era. And I have never been in that underdog era for a really, really long time. And it’s cool to be there because all I have to do to climb up is to keep fighting my way up. […] After that one she hit me with about John, I was like oh sh*t,” Bella said.
Nikki Bella returned to the ring in 2025, and she appears to be challenging herself against the current crop of talents. She is from another era, and is one of the longest-reigning Divas Champions of all time in WWE. Will she win her first Intercontinental Title from Becky Lynch? Only time will tell.
