Becky Lynch Was Forced To Retire From Wrestling 7 Years Before Her WWE Debut

Becky Lynch

There’s little that Becky Lynch hasn’t accomplished in WWE, having been crowned both Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion on a number of occasions. She won the Royal Rumble in 2019, and the following April, became one of three women alongside Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair to main event WrestleMania. After pinning Rousey in controversial fashion as the former UFC star’s shoulders weren’t on the mat, Lynch became both Raw and SmackDown Women’s Champion, dubbing herself Becky Two Belts.

While Becky Lynch was defeated for the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Charlotte Flair the next month, she remained the Raw Women’s Champion until relinquishing the title the following May when she announced that she was pregnant with her first child. After being away for a year and giving birth to her daughter Roux, Lynch made a shocking return at the 2021 edition of SummerSlam, where she defeated Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship in under 30 seconds.

After the WWE Draft caused her and Charlotte Flair to swap titles as Lynch was drafted to Raw and Flair was drafted to SmackDown, Becky Lynch reigned as Raw Women’s Champion again until losing to Bianca Belair at WrestleMania 38.

Becky Lynch’s Accomplishments Nearly Didn’t Come To Pass As She Originally Retired Before Making It To WWE

Long before becoming Becky Lynch in WWE, the star wrestled as Rebecca Knox on the independent scene. During a match in Germany in 2006, the star suffered a head injury that caused her to step away from wrestling for seven years. Speaking in a 2016 interview with ESPN, Becky Lynch detailed her decision to step away at the young age of 19.

“I quit wrestling in 2006 because I just got lost. My mom didn’t want me wrestling, I was wondering if I was going to make it in wrestling, I got injured in a match, I was 19, I was away from home, living in Florida and I just got lost. I couldn’t face it, so I stepped away. It was like a death for me, and that is not an exaggeration. I struggled for years to find what I wanted to do.

“I was away for seven years. I always kept journals, and it’s crazy to go back and read these journals because it seemed like I had unfinished business. I always felt like it was something I was meant to do, but I just didn’t know how to get back in. So I ended up just trying to do something to fill the void.”

After her long hiatus, Becky Lynch decided to put that unfinished business to rest when she signed a developmental contract with WWE NXT, and the rest is history when it comes to the star’s accomplished career. She is currently sidelined with an arm injury that she suffered during her match with Bianca Belair at SummerSlam.
