Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus felt like they had a point to prove in the final match of their rivalry.
The steel cage match between the two former Women’s Champions took place at the Payback Premium Live Event. The blowoff was originally scheduled for SummerSlam but was cut from the show due to time restraints and moved to an episode of Raw. Following multiple non-finishes and Stratus avoiding Lynch, the match was finally announced for Payback.
The buildup to the steel cage match would cause some excitement to dip as Lynch and Stratus felt like the feud had gone on for too long. However, all negativity was forgotten on the night as the match was very well received.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Lynch joked that the quality of the PLE dipped after their match before explaining that the match against Stratus was a career highlight for her:
“Yeah, we crushed it we stole the damn show, started it off, it was all downhill from there. No, it wasn’t, it was actually a great, great show. But we started off hot, I think like a few chips on our shoulder story had been going on for a long time, maybe not getting the steam that necessarily we wanted, and being left off SummerSlam obviously. I understand why these decisions are made, but really wanted to go out there and prove it and getting that time, getting that steel cage match was the perfect way to finish it. You know, match of our life.”
