On the February 27th edition of Monday Night Raw, Hall of Famer Lita teamed with Becky Lynch to defeat Damage CTRL for the Women’s Tag Team Champions.
The victory marked Lita’s first WWE title in over 17 years while also being the first time the two Superstars have won tag team gold in their respective careers.
It was a moment ushered in with celebrations and fireworks. Furthermore, as well as being a dream for Lynch to team up with her childhood hero, she also tied a 17-year-old WWE record set by Ric Flair.
In a social media post by Wrestling Stats & Info, they revealed that Flair and Lynch are the only two Superstars to win the tag team titles with an already-inducted Hall of Famer.
“This also means that @BeckyLynchWWE joins @RicFlairNatrBoy as the only Superstars to hold @WWE tag team gold with an already-inducted #WWE Hall of Famer as their partner. #TheMan”
The record set by Flair in 2006, saw the legend hold the titles with Rowdy Roddy Piper. At Cyber Sunday of that year, the two icons defeated the Spirit Squad for the gold.
Who Will Becky Lynch And Lita Defend The Titles Against At WrestleMania?
As WrestleMania 39 fast approaches the title win for Lynch and Lita could mean several potential matches are on the cards for the newly-formed duo.
A championship rematch with Damage CTRL is very possible as Dakota Kai and IYO SKY will undoubtedly want the title back around their waists. However, the involvement of Trish Stratus could very well lead to a six-woman match between the two Hall of Famers and Lynch against the Damage CRTL trio in a marquee match.
But, over on SmackDown Lynch’s former rival Ronda Rousey and her partner Shayna Baszler have their eyes on tag team gold. It has previously been noted that Rousey would be challenging for the Women’s Tag Team titles, making this match even bigger.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer stated that the switch came as WrestleMania is about “marquee matches.”
“Shayna Baszler & Ronda Rousey will challenge for the women’s tag titles. It was originally against Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai, the champions. But Lita & Becky Lynch face Sky & Kai, and WrestleMania is about marquee matches and Lita & Lynch as a team against Baszler & Rousey is a bigger match.”
