Becky Lynch has recalled the trademark battle involving Ric Flair.
SumerSlam 2018 saw Lynch finally snap and attack Charlotte Flair. What was originally supposed to be a heel turn had the opposite effect as Lynch became the most popular star on the roster.
Developing a badass edge and firing insults on social media, Lynch would become known as The Man to WWE fans. However, as longtime watchers of professional wrestling are aware, Flair would also use the same nickname for himself along with the famous catchphrase “To be the man, you gotta beat the man” in many promos. Flair would continue to use the catchphrase for many associated projects including his autobiography and podcast with Conrad Thompson.
Ric Flair would take issue with the quote being used, telling TMZ in 2019 that he wanted money for his catchphrase being used. Flair would also state that he is a huge supporter of Lynch and that his issue was with WWE.
The war of words would continue as Flair made comments about Lynch on his podcast and Lynch would respond on social media, generating a series of back-and-forth responses between the two.
An update would be provided a couple of years later when Ric Flair would apologise to Becky Lynch at the Raw 30th anniversary show in 2023.
Recalling the drama on the Nathan, Nat and Shaun podcast, Lynch noted the differences between their 2 nicknames:
“It was never really the man with Flair. He just said, to be the man you got to beat the man. He was The Nature Boy; I am The Man.”
In regards to Flair’s legal threats, The Man stated that anything related to that was above her and that her main concern was living up to her name:
“Didn’t come at me personally. Yeah, it’s above my pay grade. I just am happy still being The Man. I don’t know what happened. I am just The Man. I just go around telling everybody I’m The Man and proving that I’m The Man. That’s all that I need to worry about.”
Becky Lynch Proud Of High-Profile Match
Having a lengthy list of accomplishments, Lynch is one of the most decorated athletes in the history of women’s wrestling. With multiple big-time matches to her name, Becky Lynch has a fondness for one in particular.
