Becky Lynch Recalls Thinking “It Was Over” After Nia Jax Broke Her Nose

WWE Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch has recalled thinking that her run to the top of WWE was over after Nia Jax broke her nose in the lead up to Survivor Series in 2018.

Despite turning heel at SummerSlam 2018, after failing to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship, fan support for Becky Lynch began to increase. The support for the Irish Superstar continued to grow as Lynch won the SmackDown Women’s Title from Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell.

Now calling herself The Man, Lynch was on a collision course with Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, with the pair scheduled to meet at Survivor Series. The SmackDown star’s popularity was at an all-time high and the bout with Rousey was one of the most anticipated women’s matches in WWE history.

On the November 12th episode of Raw, Lynch led an invasion by SmackDown’s women’s division, taking out their Raw counterparts. During the brawl, Nia Jax left Lynch with a broken nose and a concussion. This meant that The Man had to be pulled from Survivor Series on medical grounds, being replaced by Charlotte Flair.

Speaking ahead of Survivor Series 2021 with Vicente Beltran, Becky Lynch recalled thinking that the best run of her career was over after being injured by Jax. However, her mood changed when she saw fan reaction to photos of her bloodied salute to the camera after the brawl.

“I suppose by being diligent, by being consistent,” Becky Lynch said. “So, at the time, I had no idea what was going on. I thought this was it. This was over, but then all the other pictures came out, and it looked pretty freakin’ cool. And then people got more interested in it, and I was like, okay, well we’re on to something and so then just kept going kept trying to ride that momentum until Wrestlemania. And of course, you never know if there’s going to be another hurdle or if you’re gonna fall at the last jump, but yeah, we made it there.”

After missing Survivor Series, Lynch was beaten for the SmackDown Women’s Title at TLC after interference from Ronda Rousey. After failing to win back the championship at Royal Rumble, she entered the Royal Rumble match, replacing an injured Lana, going on to win.

This led to the Lynch main eventing WrestleMania 35 in a Triple Threat Match with Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey. At the event, “Becky Two Belts” was born as she pinned Rousey to win both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Titles.
