Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair have a storied history, beginning with their surprise clash at SummerSlam in 2021.
Belair had been scheduled to defend her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks at the event, but when Banks was unavailable for undisclosed reasons, she was surprised by Becky Lynch making her return for the first time in over a year after giving birth to her daughter Roux.
In a shocking turn of events, Lynch defeated Belair in just 26 seconds, something Belair has called one of the most difficult nights of her career.
The next year, however, Belair got retribution after winning the Royal Rumble and challenging Lynch for the Raw Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 38. The EST was victorious, winning her first Raw Women’s Championship on the Grandest Stage of Them All and beginning a title reign that’s still going strong today.
The two faced off once more at SummerSlam in 2022, and Belair was victorious yet again, cementing her legacy as a dominant champion and setting the stage to break multiple records in WWE. Despite the difficulty of losing to Lynch in 2021, Belair has since said that the story coming full circle in 2022 was worth it.
However, speaking in an interview with Stephen A. Smith on Know Mercy, Lynch claims their bout at the 2022 edition of SummerSlam nearly didn’t take place. In fact, Lynch says she had to fight to get the Raw Women’s Championship on the show
“Last year, at SummerSlam, had to fight a little bit to get a women’s title match on the show. When Logan Paul has a match and Pat McAfee has a match, and Seth Rollins doesn’t have a match, he’s been working all year. Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair almost didn’t have a match, that’s a bit of a problem.
“Personally, and from a work ethic standpoint, you put all of this effort into this, all year round, and when the big shows come, the big stadiums come, and there are 80,000 people, you want to receive your flowers for the hard work you put in all year round so that we can do this so that we’re on TV for 52 weeks a year and just killing the game. You don’t want somebody to take your spot, not somebody who doesn’t do this all the time.” (h/t Fightful)
Becky Lynch Was Injured At SummerSlam 2022
Not long into her 2022 SummerSlam match with Belair, The Man suffered a separated shoulder. However, she continued in the match, and the two put on a fantastic show for the Nashville audience.
After Belair was victorious, she and Lynch showed respect to one another in the ring after months of being bitter rivals. However, the celebration was short-lived as Bayley made her shock return to WWE to confront Belair, and she brought Dakota Kai and IYO SKY (previously known as Io Shirai) to aid her.
The group now known as Damage CTRL attacked Lynch the next night on Raw after she announced her shoulder injury, writing her off television until her return ahead of WarGames at Survivor Series, where she aided her team to victory over Damage CTRL, Rhea Ripley, and Nikki Cross.
