Multiple time World Champion Dave Batista made a triumphant return to the WWE at the 2014 Royal Rumble, winning the 30 man contest for a second time and securing his spot in the WrestleMania 30 main event.
But a backstage wardrobe malfunction very nearly torpedoed The Animal’s return, as recently detailed on WWE’s ‘The Day Of’ series.
Eventually entering the Rumble at number 28, the grappler, now famous for his portrayal of Guardians of the Galaxy character Drax the Destroyer, recalled the race against time in fixing his ring boot zipper prior to his number being called:
Of course, man, I have a new style of boots also, you know, kind of a lighter boot and the zipper breaks. So they start sewing up my boot and I’m going out number 28 in the Rumble. I’m sitting there watching the monitor as they’re sewing my boot up and they’re already on number 22. You know, it was chaotic but it just seemed like old times because every time we were getting ready for a show, everything goes wrong, man. Then you end up running from here to there and just nothing’s going right. The biggest thing I was concerned about was not being able to warm up because I was still working with an injury and I knew I had to run into the ring and I wasn’t sure how it was going to feel.
Despite his pre-match efforts, Batista’s Rumble victory was not well received by fans, whom were unhappy at Daniel Bryan’s apparent omission from the contest.
Bryan would of course get his day in the sun, defeating Triple H and then both Randy Orton and Batista to capture gold at The Show of Shows.
