Christian Cage shocked the wrestling world when he signed with AEW live on air at Revolution on March 7th. Fightful have now revealed the backstage reaction to the move at WWE.
According to the report on the Fightful Select platform, wrestlers in WWE were not aware that the ‘Instant Classic’ would be debuting on AEW, but there were suspicions since he hadn’t appeared or been referenced on WWE TV since his return to the ring at the Royal Rumble.
The report also noted that ‘higher-ups’ in WWE were let down by Christian’s decision to leave WWE.
“Higher-ups in WWE told Fightful that Christian not being referenced on WWE TV wasn’t a coincidence and that while they were let down that Christian made the move, it was on the company for not having a contract locked down”
Following his return to wrestling action in the Royal Rumble match in January after not being medically cleared for several years, there had been much speculation on the next move Christian would make, with many believing the team of Edge and Christian would reunite. However, ‘Captain Charisma’ made cautious remarks about his future, saying that he was only ever promised one more match, and the Royal Rumble might well have been that bout.
However, Tony Khan recently revealed that Christian reached out to AEW about the possibility of wrestling for them, and it was that conversation that led to his signing at Revolution.
