Backstage Update On WWE’s Plans For Gunther

Gunther & Mustafa Ali at WWE Night of Champions

Roman Reigns isn’t the only WWE Superstar making a run at company history.

While Reigns continues to rack up the days as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion — complete with shiny new title belt — Gunther is also in the midst of a stunningly dominant run.

The Austrian star hasn’t been defeated in singles action since moving to the main roster in April 2022 and has held the Intercontinental Title since June 10th. This run has seen the star hold the gold for 358 days (as of June 3rd, 2023) and he’s currently sitting third on the all-time list behind Macho Man Randy Savage and the Honky Tonk Man.

It appears that this has been very much a topic of conversation within WWE, and according to a report from WRKD Wrestling, there have been talks about Gunther breaking the Honky Tonk Man’s record which stands at 454 days.

“Roman Reigns isn’t the only superstar inching closer to history. We’ve learned that there are internal talks for Gunther to pass Honky Tonk Man’s all time historic Intercontinental championship reign. He’d officially break the record on September 6th.”

Gunther Sets Sights On Brock Lesnar For WWE Money In The Bank

Outside of his record-breaking Intercontinental Title run, Gunther has long been linked with a match against Brock Lesnar after their staredown at the Royal Rumble.

Speaking in a recent interview, Gunther discussed the prospect of a match with The Beast and said that he hoped they could meet at Money In The Bank in London.
