Backstage Update On Kenny Omega’s AEW Contract

Kenny Omega in action at AEW Revolution

While Kenny Omega is no stranger to being in the headlines for his in-ring exploits, he’s been in the news recently for something totally different.

Omega’s future with AEW became the subject of much speculation when it was reported that WWE was looking to land a major free agent. Some believed that free agent to be the former AEW World Champion given that his most recent contract was set to expire in January.

However, it has since been noted that time has been added to his deal as a result of the nine months he missed through injury. Although it remains unclear exactly how much time was added on.

To add further intrigue to the situation, it has been said that Omega is potentially open-minded regarding a switch. Meanwhile, WWE is expected to “go hard” to sign a number of top AEW stars as their contracts expire.

Seemingly in response to this, Dave Meltzer has revealed in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that AEW has opened negotiations with both Omega and the Young Bucks.

AEW is working on signing the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega to new long-term deals well before they become free agents. With the Bucks, while they may do well in WWE, it’s not guaranteed, and they will have a better schedule in AEW meaning more time with the family and also less matches and can do their style.

With Omega, he doesn’t have kids and he would likely get a major push and would have no end to having fresh opponents. It would also close the door to Japan that he’s waited years to re-open. But he did at least consider and have talks with WWE 2018-19 and wasn’t negative about WWE at all while making his choice to go to AEW. Khan did say he hoped Omega would be in the company for a long time to come.”

Tony Khan Aiming To Keep Hold Of Kenny Omega

Appearing at the post-Revolution media scrum AEW President Tony Khan was asked about Kenny Omega’s future. While Khan wouldn’t be drawn on any negotiations, he said that he hopes the star will stay with AEW for many years.

At Revolution, Omega and the Young Bucks lost the World Trios Titles to the House of Black.
