Backstage Update On Dwayne Johnson Appearing At WrestleMania 40

Dwayne Johnson on WWE SmackDown

For months rumours ran wild about Dwayne Johnson returning to the ring at WrestleMania 39.

The general idea was that Johnson would lace up his boots one more time to take on Roman Reigns at the spectacular. However, the main event slot opposite Reigns went to Cody Rhodes, amid reports that the Hollywood star turned the match with the Tribal Chief down as he didn’t have sufficient time to prepare.

Despite the non-appearance from the man known as The Rock, he still made headlines during WrestleMania weekend. The WWE legend teased a showdown with Reigns on social media when commenting on the event.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that while Johnson left a “crack in the door” regarding a future appearance, it was “far from a commitment.”

“Reigns had pretty much gone through everyone at the top tier on the roster, and with the exception of GUNTHER or, of course, The Rock. Dwayne Johnson, when he turned down this year due to schedule, did leave a crack in the door open about possibly doing Philadelphia at WrestleMania 40 next year, but that was far from a commitment and certainly nothing anyone should count on happening. There didn’t appear to be another new challenger on the horizon.”

Roman Reigns Responds To Dwayne Johnson

The comments from Johnson didn’t go unnoticed with Roman Reigns stating that he was a “smart businessman,” adding that “he knows what he is doing.”

At WrestleMania 39, Roman Reigns successfully defended his Undisputed WWE Universal Title against Cody Rhodes. Meanwhile, The Rock hasn’t wrestled a serious match since losing to John Cena at WrestleMania 29 in 2013.
