A backstage update has emerged on Bron Breakker’s planned appearance in the men’s Royal Rumble match.
The 2022 Royal Rumble event saw a host of WWE Hall of Famers and legends return to compete in both the men’s and women’s Rumbles, with Ronda Rousey, Shane McMahon, and Bad Bunny topping the list. Unlike recent years, however, there were no NXT 2.0 stars in either of the Rumbles.
In the weeks building to the Rumble, there were a handful of NXT names rumoured to be entering the contests, most notably Bron Breakker and GUNTHER, the former WALTER. There were actually plans for Breakker in the bout before his appearance was scrapped.
Per Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the current NXT Champion was due to have a spot with Dolph Ziggler, though no details have been released as to what, exactly, the spot would have entailed:
“There was some talk of doing a Bron Breakker spot with Dolph Ziggler to build NXT, but the decision was made not to have anyone from NXT in the Rumble.”
Despite the belief internally being that NXT talent would be used to the point a handful were even scheduled to be flown into St. Louis, the decision was ultimately made that there was to be no NXT involvement in this year’s Royal Rumbles. The reason why is yet to be revealed.
WWE has been teasing an NXT appearance from Ziggler for a few weeks now. The former World Heavyweight Champion responded to a tweet from Breakker in a post-show angle from this week’s Raw, teasing challenging Bron for the NXT Championship at a later date, but nothing has yet been confirmed.
Capturing the NXT Championship from Tommaso Ciampa on 4 January at the New Year’s Evil special, Bron Breakker has wrestled just one match since, teaming with Ciampa to defeat Legado del Fantasma’s Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde on this week’s NXT 2.0.
