In January of 2022, the wrestling world was shocked to learn that after decades with the company, William Regal had been released from his WWE contract.
Two months later, he debuted in All Elite Wrestling, where he helped found the Blackpool Combat Club with longtime friends Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta were later added to their ranks, and the group was a force to be reckoned with in AEW, particularly with Moxley holding the AEW World Championship.
However, with the political landscape in WWE changing drastically after Vince McMahon‘s retirement from the company in July, speculation began to abound that Regal may want to re-join Triple H in the sports entertainment giant as the two had a close working relationship during Regal’s time in NXT.
At All Out, Regal shocked the world by turning on Jon Moxley and helping MJF win the AEW World Championship by giving him brass knuckles to use. However, an alliance between Regal and MJF didn’t last long as MJF attacked him on the following episode of Dynamite, writing him out of All Elite Wrestling.
Tony Khan confirmed that MJF‘s attack on William Regal would indeed be his last live appearance with the brand, though he did appear in a pre-taped segment on December 7th in an attempt to explain his exit in a final message to the Blackpool Combat Club. Khan explained that Regal requested to be able to return to WWE in order to work with his son, who wrestles under the name Charlie Dempsey on WWE NXT. He will not be allowed to appear in an on-screen role.
William Regal Is WWE’s Vice President Of Global Development
While it’s been known that Regal serves as Vice President of Global Development for the sports entertainment giant, a new report from PWInsider sheds more light on what his role entails.
According to the report, Regal is present at every episode of Raw and SmackDown. As part of his backstage role, he watches every match that WWE produces and takes notes, meeting with talent after their matches in order to offer advice on how they can make the matches look more realistic in the ring. He reportedly provides notes on selling, physicality during lockups and reversals, and things of that nature.
PWInsider states that Regal is mostly giving notes on the finer points of matches, helping to ensure that everyone looks stronger inside the squared circle.
