On the November 7th edition of Monday Night Raw, Austin Theory made history. Although not the kind of history that he was hoping. On the show Theory cashed-in his Money In The Bank contract on United States Champion Seth Rollins, only to be defeated.
This marked the first time that a Money In The Bank winner had cashed-in their contract on a non-World Champion, while he joined the likes of John Cena, Baron Corbin, Damian Sandow, The Miz and Braun Strowman in failing to walk out with the gold.
“I Never Thought I’d Have A Failed Cash-In” – Austin Theory
Despite speculation that Theory’s career might be in trouble, especially given that his biggest backstage supporter in Vince McMahon was no loner around, the star has bounced back quickly. At Survivor Series, Theory defeated Bobby Lashley and champion Seth Rollins to claim the United States Title. The earlier defeat to Rollins sparked a shift in character for the star who admitted that he couldn’t be a “goof-ball” taking selfies forever.
Speaking to BT Sport in the aftermath of his win at Survivor Series, Theory reflected on his failed cash-in and how he’s bounced back.
“Growing up watching the Money in the Bank matches were exciting and the cash-ins were exciting but I have to say, I never thought I’d have the failed cash-in but I guess I would be one of those guys but I would say for me, that whole process of that day of losing the Money in the Bank contract and kind of, where do I go now?
I literally hit rock bottom, so what now? And kind of just to have this revamp of a personality and bring out this different type of energy that people aren’t used to from Austin Theory, it kind of just shifts everything and for me, it’s great and looking at it long term, it can only evolve and get better from here.”
