A new report has claimed that AEW management got involved after a match featuring Athena didn’t quite go to plan.
On a recent episode of AEW Dark Elevation taped in Toronto, Athena took on local star Jody Threat. Many fans noted Athena appeared to be overly physical and stiff with her opponent as the match went on. In the end the established star picked up the win in a little under five minutes.
Athena Was “Approached By Management”
A new report from Fightful Select has now attempted to shed some light on the situation and what happened backstage after the match. The report states that as Threat got a strong hometown reception from the crowd, Athena worked heel but got to “too aggressive for AEW management.”
During the bout, Threat slipped as she began what was supposed to be her comeback, and got “a little lost” asking the veteran what was supposed to happen next. From here the match “devolved into more physicality.”
While several pointed out that Threat had no problem in dealing with the physicality, it should never have happened. Those close to Athena revealed that both women were approached by management to make sure they were okay. One source familiar with the situation said that it should have been an opportunity to lead by example.
It should be noted that Jody Threat didn’t complain about how the match went and hasn’t spoken about how everything went within it.
Since signing with AEW back in May Athena has appeared regularly across AEW Dark and Dark Elevation. The star initially entered a feud with Jade Cargill which saw her challenge for the TBS Championship, although she was unsuccessful.
In recent weeks the former WWE star challenged for the AEW Interim Women’s Championship but was again unsuccessful. Her most recent match came on October 13th at a taping for AEW Dark where she defeated Alexia Nicole.
