Former WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio has added to his list of controversies after being involved in a backstage altercation at an event in Mexico.
Alberto Del Rio, who now wrestles as Alberto El Patron, was in his native Mexico to take part in a show for KAOZ Lucha Libre. According to several reports online, Del Rio was told by the promoter of the event to be at the arena in Monterrey by 3 pm. The former WWE and IMPACT Wrestling star didn’t turn up until two hours later leading the promoter to instruct security to bar Del Rio from entering the locker room.
Del Rio’s brother El Hijo de Dos Caras could be heard shouting in video footage that promoter Alonso Botello was only causing an issue because cameras were present to capture the goings-on. He also told Botello he was using Del Rio to create a story and that he wasn’t told to be at the building by 3 pm.
Despite the furore Alberto Del Rio ended up wrestling on the show in a match for the KAOZ Heavyweight Title that saw 51-year-old Heavy Metal escape with the gold.
Following runs with AAA and CMLL in Mexico, Alberto Del Rio signed with WWE in 2009 and made an impressive debut on the August 20th, 2010 episode of SmackDown which saw him defeat Rey Mysterio.
He went on to have a highly successful career in the company, highlighted by multiple WWE and World Championship reigns as well as winning the 2011 Royal Rumble which featured 40 Superstars.
Alberto Del Rio recently announced the tragic passing of his ex-wife on social media days after appealing for blood and platelet donors to help save her.
