AJ Styles has revealed that he asked for face a WWE legend at WrestleMania after retiring The Undertaker in 2020.
For well over 15 years AJ Styles has been known as one of the premiere professional wrestlers in the world. He has achieved success in promotions across the globe capturing World Titles wherever he’s been.
After a glittering run with New Japan Pro Wrestling came to an end in early 2016, the Phenomenal One headed to WWE. Debuting at the Royal Rumble, Styles made an instant impression, and was World Champion within nine months.
Arguably Styles most famous WWE match to date was his clash with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 36. The cinematic Boneyard Match was well received by fans and critics, and served as the final match of ‘Taker’s incredible career.
With his new penchant for facing legends at WrestleMania it has previously been reported that the star pitched to face Shawn Michaels, pushing WWE to make an offer to the Heartbreak Kid.
Styles has now revealed that Michaels isn’t the only Hall of Famer he tried to tempt back into the ring. Speaking to Fightful, via Fightful Select, Styles recalled making a play to face
Triple H.
“Well, the last person I tried was Triple H. I didn’t get him. I don’t know who the next guy is or if there will be another one. Now we’ve got the younger talent coming up. Maybe I’m the match that they would like to have. I would like to have some good ones before I retire. Who knows? I don’t know who’s going to be next. None of us do. We’ll just have to see what happens.”
Triple H announced his in-ring retirement in the lead up to WrestleMania 38 as a result of a “serious cardiac event” he suffered in September 2021. Following the retirement of Vince McMahon, he has since been made Head of Creative and Head of Talent Relations.
