AJ Styles has taken to Twitter to give his reaction to Will Ospreay winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at NJPW Sakura Genesis.
Ospreay had previously won the 2021 New Japan Cup earning the right to challenge Kota Ibushi at the event.
Towards the end of the gruelling 30-minute match, Ospreay kicked out of Ibushi’s combination of a standing Kamigoye and regular Kamigoye before taking the champion down with a Chelsea Grin and finally putting him away with the Stormbreaker.
The victory meant that Ospreay became the first British wrestler to win New Japan’s richest prize.
Posting on Twitter, Styles, himself a former two-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, congratulated the new title holder, commenting “It’s was like I was looking into the mirror. Congratulations to the New IWGP Champion.”
