AJ Styles has discussed how his ring name came to be.The WWE Superstar revealed the origin story on WWE Untold. The episode was looking back at Styles’ career and his journey to making his WWE debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble.
The real-life Allen Jones had this to say on coming up with his ring name:
“AJ came from my football team, everybody called me AJ so that stuck.I was tagging with a guy in one of my first matches and his last name was Steel. So they were like ‘uhh…Styles.Styles and Steel, that’ll work.’Boom, that’s your name.I didn’t like it.The name Styles just sounded corny to me, it didn’t sound cool at all.”
The former WWE Champion then revealed what he had done differently:
“It was just spelled S-T-Y-L-E-S, why didn’t I spell it differently? S-T-I-L-E-C or something, just do something different, it was just so common.”
On his thoughts on the name now, Styles said:
“I’ve grown to love it.”
The name certainly did AJ Styles no harm as his stellar career has seen him win championships in TNA, NJPW, and WWE.Styles is scheduled to compete in this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match, 5 years after first setting foot in a WWE ring.
