AJ Styles has heaped praise on his former tag team partner, Omos, comparing him to Andre The Giant and saying he could be one of the greatest Superstars ever.
Omos first joined forces with AJ Styles as his ‘Personal Colossus’ in October 2020. As the months passed, Omos helped Styles during his matches, much to the chagrin of the former World Champion’s opponents.
In March 2021, Omos announced that he would be stepping inside the ring for the first time, teaming with Styles to take on The New Day at WrestleMania 37. On the night, Styles and Omos won the Raw Tag Team Championships, with the former college basketball star earning praise for his performance.
The two reigned for 133 days before losing the titles to RK-Bro at SummerSlam in August. They continued to team together for several more months, but cracks began appearing in the partnership and things finally came to a head on the December 20th edition of Raw when Omos turned on Styles during a tag match with the Mysterios.
The definitive end for the team came the following week when Omos defeated Styles in a match, kicking off a singles run which ‘The Phenomenal One’ believes will ultimately lead to great things for the giant.
Speaking to BT Sport’s Ariel Helwani, AJ Styles said that teaming with Omos allowed him to help the “young monster” develop. He added that it was a good time to end the team when they did as it allows Omos to begin learning to do things for himself.
“I thought, ‘here is an opportunity for me to help this young monster develop and be someone unbelievable one day. It was exciting at first when we were tag champs, but then there was a lot of times where we were spinning our wheels based on what we were given and the parameters in which we could do it. It did make it difficult.”
“It was a good time to end it. He needs to be able to learn to do it himself and there is only so much you can explain to someone. Until you’re doing it yourself and you’re learning as you go, it’s guys like Kurt Angle who are able to learn so quickly because they were in the ring with so many other great athletes that they develop so quickly.”
The two-time WWE Champion went on to claim that Omos has the potential to be one of the best ever, even comparing him to the legendary Andre The Giant.
“He could be one of the greatest superstars ever. He could be just like Andre The Giant. He’s bigger than Andre, I think, I could be wrong, I never met Andre. He’s a massive human being. To have him stand in front of you, you have to see it to believe it. He’s not a goofy giant. He’s a very smart individual.
According to Styles, one of the key attributes that Omos has is that he can talk for himself and doesn’t need a mouthpiece. As for how far he can go, Styles says only time will tell.
I think he’s more than capable of doing it himself instead of having a mouthpiece, he doesn’t need that. Time will tell. Some people can handle it, some people can’t. You can only do so much for someone and then they have to take control of their own career.”
