AJ Styles Discusses Cody Rhodes’ Contract Status & The Royal Rumble

AJ Styles has shared his thoughts surrounding rumours that Cody Rhodes could appear in the Royal Rumble after declaring himself a “free agent.”

Rhodes confirmed reports that he was currently working without a contract in AEW in his impassioned promo on Dynamite that led to him challenging Sammy Guevara to a ladder match for the Undisputed TNT Championship.

With WWE seemingly opening the Forbidden Door themselves as they welcome IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Champion Mickie James back for the Royal Rumble, rumours have persisted that Cody Rhodes could make a shocking appearance in the men’s 30-man match.

Now one of those men, AJ Styles, has given his thoughts on the situation surrounding Rhodes in an interview with Wrestling Inc.’s Nick Hausman, and says he’s calling The American Nightmare out:

“Well, I think I read that he said he wasn’t coming back. I don’t know about that. Cody, I am going to call you out man, I don’t know about that one. Because, you’re able to do independents while working for AEW, right? So what’s the difference?”

Styles confirmed he’d love to see Cody Rhodes as part of the Royal Rumble, rhetorically asking “who wouldn’t?”

It remains highly unlikely that Cody Rhodes will make a one-night WWE return as he has reaffirmed his commitment to AEW, the company he helped found. However, as the company said for many years and as fans know only too well, especially at this time of year, anything can happen in WWE.
