AJ Mendez, formerly known as AJ Lee in WWE has bravely opened up about her mental health struggles and living with bipolar disorder.
Former WWE Superstar AJ Lee is known as a fierce advocate of mental health awareness and has been open about her own struggles for a number of years. The star suffers with bipolar disorder, and has previously disclosed that she once contemplated taking her own life.
Mendez was diagnosed as bipolar when she was 19, although while working with WWE, the company were unaware of her diagnosis.
Speaking during a new interview with Renee Paquette on The Sessions, the former Divas Champion spoke candidly about her treatment and how her diagnosis affects her day-to-day life.
“Try to not be too prescriptive because I think it’s different for everybody. But I think it’s a lot of trial and error. I’ve literally done everything holistic, I’ve done medicine. I’ve, I’ve done everything under the sun, and I found the cocktail that works for me.
So I do have a thing that I do when I feel that way. And the most important part is knowing that it’s happening. We’re not just like, Oh, I’m sad. And this is how it feels that the world is terrible. I know. It’s a depressive cycle now, not only comes with experience and treatment and going to doctors and talking about it being very open.
So people around, you know, just look out for it. I tell my husband It’s a dark day. He’s like, all right, stay in bed.”
During the interview, the WOW Executive Producer also discussed how she dealt with her mental health issues while with WWE.
