Former Divas Champion AJ Lee has spoken candidly about WWE Chairman Vince McMahon’s reaction to her choosing to leave WWE and retire from the ring.
AJ Lee – now known as AJ Mendez – had quite the WWE career in the midst of the Divas era in the company. Lee’s character propelled her to the main event scene where she revelled in causing chaos between CM Punk, Kane, and Bryan Danielson before being named as Raw General Manager on the 1000th episode of WWE’s flagship show by Vince McMahon.
Following that AJ Lee let her in-ring exploits do the talking as she held the Divas Title on three separate occasions. Her first reign with the title was the longest Divas Title reign in history at the time.
AJ Lee hasn’t wrestled since April 2015 when she decided to walk away from WWE. The star remained away from wrestling altogether until assuming a role as Executive Producer with WOW in October 2021.
Now speaking on The Sessions with Renee Paquette, the New Jersey native detailed Vince McMahon’s reaction to her choosing to step away from the ring:
“He was very kind, he was just like the door’s always open if you want to come back. And that to me was – I don’t know, like I know it’s different for some people, but to me, it was so important to go out on top on my own terms. I had seen you can go back, there’s a lot of people who get buried in there at the end and I got to like win at Mania and go.”
“It just all felt like it was the right time, the right way. Couldn’t do anything else. There wasn’t anything else I wanted in my career. Like if I checked everything off. And for it to be like, okay, go fly. You know, I will be free. Yeah, I appreciated that. To me. It was exactly what it needed to be.”
AJ Lee also opened up to speak honestly about her mental health struggles, including her battle with bipolar disorder.
