All Elite Wrestling has set fan’s tongues wagging after posting photos that appear to be close-up shots of new championship belts, that many are speculating is a new Trios Title.
The official AEW Twitter account posted the photo of what appears to be a gold belt on black leather with the only caption offered being the eyes emoji.
There have long been rumours that the company could be set to add more gold to its ranks. With AEW having a lot of factions and associations on their roster, a trios title could fit the same way as the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Title does in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Speaking on the subject of a potential Trios Title back in December, AEW President Tony Khan revealed that it was something the company was looking to introduce in 2021.
Khan said:
“If it happens, it will most likely be in 2021. I’ve been seriously thinking about it. I think there’s a lot of momentum for it, we have a lot of great trios teams.”
Trios Championships have been around for many years in wrestling with several Mexican promotions including the two biggest in that country, AAA and CMLL both having Trios Titles. In Japan, alongside NJPW, FMW, DDT, and GWC have all had Trios Championships competed for in their respective promotions.
AEW would be far from the first US-based promotion to introduce Trios or Six-Man Tag Team Titles. Ring Of Honor introduced their Worlds Six-Man Tag Team Title in 2016 with the likes of SCU, Bullet Club, and The Kingdom all holding that gold. WCW briefly introduced a World Six-Man Tag Team Title but it only lasted for ten months in 1991. That title was first held by Junkyard Dog, Tommy Rich, and Ricky Morton with the last champions before its deactivation being The York Foundation which included Morton and Rich.
There is no word when any announcement will be made on a new title being introduced into AEW. But with groups like Jurassic Express, The Hardy Family Office, Dark Order, The Elite, Inner Circle, and The Pinnacle to name but a few, a new multi-man title is not outwith the realms of possibility.
