Thanks to Vince McMahon WWE has endured a remarkable start to 2023.
On January 6th McMahon returned to WWE’s Board of Directors along with two associates after ousting three serving members. Just days later co-CEO Stephanie McMahon announced she was leaving the company altogether and Vince was elected as Executive Chairman. There have been strong rumours of a sale to go along with the uncertainty, but as yet no deal has been made.
The uncertainty has naturally spread to the locker room, with Triple H recently holding a meeting where he assured the roster he was still in charge of creative. Although he did concede that he and McMahon do speak on the issue.
AEW Benefitting From Vince McMahon’s WWE Comeback
Meanwhile, in AEW the picture is far more serene and settled, especially at the top. Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, the WWE tag team legend discussed this contrast. Hardy said that AEW are the major beneficiaries of the uncertainty and apparent power struggle in WWE, comparing the scene to Game of Thrones.
“Well, first and foremost, I just want to say since we recorded our last pod, it was after we had recorded we heard all this Vince McMahon insanity, right? And now Vince McMahon is back. And he is the head, he is sitting as the head of the table of WWE currently. And we also have Stephanie gone. So there’s obviously been a big shake up.
There’s a lot of sales rumours and innuendo going around. And if you ask me more than anything who benefits from all this, I would say AEW, so I’m very happy to be at AEW currently right now. AEW has been producing great content, I think. And one thing I love about it, at WWE they’re playing Game Of Thrones, it’s like in and out who can retain the power? And who can backstab? Or who can get someone else out? Or how can I get back in, whatever. Fortunately, it’s just TK sitting in the Iron Throne.”
To cap off a truly surreal period it has been reported that AEW owners Tony and Shahid Khan are in a pool of potential buyers looking at WWE. It has also been suggested that the Khan family would be interested in merging AEW and WWE should they launch a hypothetical bid for the company.
