By the time that WrestleMania 34 rolled around ‘The Streak’ was a thing of the past but a match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania remained a huge opportunity.
One of the big stories heading into the event revolved around John Cena. Despite being one of the biggest stars in WWE, he didn’t have a match for the spectacular, so set about trying to secure one. He entered the Royal Rumble Match, tried to win the Universal Championship and the WWE Championship, but was unsuccessful at every turn. In a last ditch attempt to get a WrestleMania match he called out The Undertaker.
Ricky Starks Reveals He Trained With The Undertaker
The Deadman had been out of action since being beaten by Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33. By his own admission Undertaker struggled throughout the match, and left his hat and coat in the ring at the conclusion, leaving many to believe he was retired. However, determined to go out on a better note, the WWE legend agreed to come back and face Cena.
In the lead up to WrestleMania 34, The Undertaker entered his usual training camp in a bid to get back up to full fitness. Speaking in a new interview with The Wrestling Classic, AEW star Ricky Starks has revealed that he was part of Undertaker’s training team. Starks explained that The Undertaker is his favourite wrestler of all time, and the pair have now developed a friendship.
“Taker’s like my guy. Taker’s my favorite wrestler of all time. The wildest thing is that as I got older, I actually met him. I had him watch one of my matches for the indies. I sparred with him in preparation for his match against John Cena at WrestleMania. I kept in touch with Taker still to this day when I see him, still the same, ‘Hey man, how you doing? I’m proud of you.’ That’s what he’s told me, he’s proud of me and I’m doing great so yeah, it’s really wild to go from that to sitting on a couch with [someone] that you loved when you were growing up.”
The Undertaker defeated John Cena at WrestleMania 34 but would continue to wrestle another eight times with mixed results before retiring after overcoming AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.
