A member of the AEW roster has revealed that they reached out to Cody Rhodes following the heavily criticised segment featuring The Rock on WWE TV.
February 2nd will be a day that WWE fans will remember for a number of reasons. The SmakckDown after the Royal Rumble was advertised as the day that Rhodes would make his Royal Rumble decision, which many believed to be the Undisputed Champion given the events that took place in 2023 and The American Nightmare pointing at Reigns after the victory.
Delight would quickly turn into confusion and anger as Rhodes told Reigns that he would not be facing The Tribal Chief at Mania but knew someone who would be, The People’s Champion.
The next week would see every reaction imaginable from wrestling fans regarding the Hollywood star’s sudden inclusion in Mania plans, including a section of the more vocal fans dubbed “Cody Crybabies” by The Rock. With many wanting to see Rhodes vs. Reigns, the match was eventually made official, highlighting the surge in popularity of the former AEW star. According to a former rival of Rhodes, The American Nightmare has come a long way to be sharing the ring with the Hollywood megastar.
AEW star Anthony Ogogo, who faced off against Rhodes at Double or Nothing 2021, spoke to Boxing Scene to look back on the February 2nd segment. Ogogo is honoured that he had a match with Rhodes and is happy for all of his success:
“I saw Cody in the ring with The Rock the other day, I saw it on YouTube, over a 100m views or whatever and I thought…,” Ogogo pauses, a shake of the head and he presses his lips together. “I took a screenshot. And I just thought, ‘F*ck. I was in the ring with him a couple of years ago, now he’s in with the biggest star in the world’. Everyone knows The Rock. I’m happy for Cody. He’s a very good professional wrestler. He’s worked hard. He’s bet on himself. I’m happy for him.
Still keeping in touch with Rhodes, Ogogo revealed what he said in a text message to the 2-time Royal Rumble winner:
“And I text Cody and said, ‘Mate, this is one of the coolest things I’ve seen in a long time. Buzzing for you. Go get it’. That’s what I text him. And I mean that, it’s a big thing for him.”
The Rock Warns Cody Rhodes
Although the match has been made official between Reigns and Rhodes, The Bloodline has made it very apparent that this is far from over. Looking back on the chaos of the WrestleMania press conference and sending a clear message to the fans ahead of the big day, The Rock has issued a stern warning to Cody Rhodes and WWE fans as a whole.
